4 Concerns I have for the Star Wars: The Force Awakens

With the new Star Wars movie lingering just around the edge of next month, my anticipation is seriously building. As someone who lived through the release of the "new" Star Wars movies (Episodes 1, 2, and 3), I have many concerns. The most recent Star Wars flicks were the things of legends... bad, horrible, extremely disappointing legends. Jar-Jar Binks. Enough said.

While I have high hopes for Star Wars: The Force Awakens, I have some serious concerns, too. Here are a few!

There are few characters that
I hate more than Jar-Jar.

1: Please-- no ridiculous, comic-relief only aliens.

No Jar-Jar repeats. If your character is only there to get a laugh, the character is not a well-developed character. Weave the comedy into what you have-- don't jab in a character whose sole purpose is to make people laugh. Generally, it doesn't make people laugh.

Intelligent and witty humor is what makes the difference between an entertaining movie and a good movie. The recent Marvel movies are fantastic-- partially because of their well-written screenplays. If you have some funny aliens, spend some time giving them quality dialogue.

2: More Han Solo.

This requires no explanation. He needs to be in the movie-- a lot. He's super cool-- he's a space bounty hunter-- and he always comes through to help out his friends. Han Solo should be in every story.

3: If you're making a new female character, make her strong, not superficial.

It's hard to follow up a Princess Leia. She was my number one, absolute, most awesome hero when I was in second grade. She was smart, tough, and fought for people who couldn't fight for themselves. I hope that any new female characters will follow in this same vein. Star Wars doesn't need female characters who are just there to be pretty. Let's make a new hero for a new generation of girls! :)

This is not the face of a bad guy. It just can't be!

4: If Luke Skywalker is a bad guy, I will cry for all the wrong reasons.

I've had my concerns about Luke not being in any of the movie previews. Why aren't they showing his face? It's definitely Mark Hamill's voice in the preview, and it's Luke's robotic hand on R2-D2... so where is he?

I'm a pessimist, and I'm really worried that the director plans to twist Luke into some sort of surprise villain. Darth Vader-- Luke's dad-- wasn't always a bad guy. Hypothetically, a similar fate is not a farfetched option for Luke. I just don't want it to happen. I've been purposefully avoiding any websites and media that try to sort out the missing Luke question. This is a journey that I need to make on my own...in the dark theatre...where no one else can see my potential tears.
